Living Rent Free- Bridesmaid Glam Staple
One look that’s been living rent-free in my mind is a makeup look I did this past summer for the kindest, most beautiful bridesmaid. She requested a matte eyeshadow look and a natural, light base since she doesn’t wear foundation or a full face daily. To me, this was the perfect opportunity to showcase my skills in skin prep and the key products mentioned.
The Importance of Skin Prep
When it comes to skin prep, I’m confident that it’s the key to how well the makeup will lay. My go-to products for prep are the First Aid or Skin FX exfoliating pads, which are amazing for gently removing any leftover makeup or tackling skin that could use a little extra exfoliation. This step is crucial before applying makeup to create a smooth canvas. Then, I focus on infusing hydration back into the skin with Peach & Lily’s Glass Skin Mist. It’s a powerhouse for plumping, calming redness, and boosting radiance.
For primer, I usually go for a dewy, grippy moisturizer, but this time, I wanted to create a soft matte finish. I used Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm, which is ideal for an early morning glam session. It minimizes texture, enhances coverage, blurs imperfections, and keeps oil under control—all while maintaining hydration.
Underpainting for a Natural Glow
Underpainting is my favorite technique, especially for clients who want a lighter, more natural look. It involves applying cream blush, contour, and concealer as the base FIRST then a foundation or tinted moisturizer. Clients are often curious about this process, and my answer is simple: “Underpainting, girlllll!”
To set the cream contour, I follow up with a cooler-toned contour powder and bronzer. For foundation, I reach for Makeup Forever HD for light to medium coverage. It’s a water-based formula, so it melts seamlessly into the skin—perfect when paired with a hydration-focused skin prep. I also avoid applying too much foundation or concealer around the nose for clients wanting a lighter, natural finish. This way, we avoid that dreaded “cakey” look.
For blush, I love a warm, slightly toasted pink shade. A light shimmer on the cheeks diffuses beautifully, adding a natural glow to a matte base. And for lips, my go-to gloss is Fenty Beauty’s FU$$Y—an all-time favorite that’s universally flattering.
A Unique Matte Look for a Bridesmaid
Most bridesmaids ask for a glowy look, so I was thrilled to try a full matte look on her. With her blue eyes, we opted for warm tones paired with a light cream shade on the inner corners. I think the eyeshadow lighter crease has a little more “makeup” effect, but the overall feel on her skin was soft and neutral.
We didn’t rely on any inspirational photos for this look—it was all about clear communication. I asked essential questions like, “Do you typically wear a lot of makeup?” “Do you prefer eyeliner?” “Do you like shimmer or matte shadows?” If you’re new to consulting, these questions might feel repetitive, but they’re crucial for capturing what each client wants.
In the end, it’s all about listening and using these small details to create a look they’ll love!
